Florists: The Artists of the Flower World

Every artist expresses themselves in a different way. Some work with paint. Others work with music. Still others work with flowers, and these individuals call themselves florists. The bouquets and flower arrangements that florists create are true works of art. They are designed to express emotions and evoke certain feelings. You can order a bouquet for a graduation, an anniversary, or even a birthday, and that bouquet will be made uniquely for your needs. If you would like to learn more about florists and their art, then we invite you to read the articles on this blog, and also to strike up a conversation with your florist the next time you see them.

What Does A Flower Preservation Service Do When They're Preserving The Bouquet From Your Wedding?

Sherri Carpenter

Preserving the flower bouquet from your wedding is one of the best ways to remember your special day. When done professionally, preserved flowers continue looking beautiful long after your wedding has ended. Having your wedding bouquet professionally preserved is preferable to trying to preserve it on your own by sun-drying the flowers or drying them with silica gel since a flower preservation service is able to dry them out much quicker and stop them from decaying. To learn how they're able to do this, read on to learn about the process of professional flower preservation.

Freeze-Drying

Flowers decay over time because they're eaten by bacteria on the petals. Drying out the flowers prevents the bacteria from having access to water, which stops the decay process. The quickest way to dry out flowers is freeze drying, which is why it's the preferred method for many flower preservation services. Since it dries out flowers very quickly, it minimizes the amount of decay that the flowers undergo.

In order to freeze-dry flowers, a flower preservation service will carefully place them into a freeze-drying machine and lower their temperature. The freeze-drying machine will extract air from the chamber as the temperature drops, resulting in all of the water in the flowers flowing out as vapor and turning into ice. This method rapidly extracts the vast majority of water from the flowers, preserving them and preventing them from naturally decaying.

Painting

After the flowers have been freeze-dried, the flower preservation service will carefully remove them from the chamber and paint the blossoms. Applying touch-up paint to the blossoms will make their color deeper, and the paint also serves as a layer of protection that prevents water vapor in the air from entering the petals. The touch-up paint will be selected to match the natural color of the blossoms, making your preserved wedding bouquet look just like it did when it was fresh.

Arranging and Storing

After painting, the flower preservation service will carefully arrange the flowers in the same way as your original wedding bouquet. Afterward, they'll be placed in a container to keep them protected. There are several popular containers used for storing preserved flowers. You can choose to have them pressed and put into a glass frame, place them in a shadow box, or place them in a glass display case. All of these options are designed to display your flowers while also protecting them from moisture in the air.

Professional methods of flower preservation stop decay immediately and prevent any moisture from returning to the blossoms after they're stored. With a professional flower preservation service, your wedding bouquet will look great in its display case for a very long time. Storing the display case in a cool, dry place away from sunlight will keep your bouquet preserved even longer. If you're thinking about having the bouquet from your wedding preserved, contact a flower preservation service and have arrangements made to ship your bouquet to them shortly after your wedding — the quicker you can dry out and paint the flowers, the better they'll look once they're preserved.
